SSA issues the number. This site does not take the form.
The Social Security Administration assigns Social Security Numbers and prints the cards. A format website can tell you whether nine digits follow published rules. It cannot put you on SSA’s rolls, reserve an unused number, or mail a card.
This page is a map of official application paths: Form SS-5, the live instructions at ssa.gov/number-card, the evidence categories SSA names, replacement cards, and the paid funnels that pretend to file for you. It is not an intake form. We do not accept applications.
If a search result promised that you could “apply online” on a brand that is not the official SSA hostname, stay long enough to learn the real hostname, then leave. The application belongs on SSA’s site or at an SSA office, not in a browser tool that classifies digits.
Start on SSA’s official site
The current starting page is SSA’s number-and-card hub. That is where SSA explains first cards, replacements, and corrections, and where it points you to the current Form SS-5. Older evidence lists still live under the ssnumber path. Bookmark the official hostname. Do not bookmark a review article and treat last year’s screenshot as the form.
Look-alike domains add extra words, swap the TLD, or wrap “ssa” inside a checkout brand. Ranking in an ad slot does not make them official. If the URL is not on the official SSA hostname, it is not taking your SS-5, no matter how many seals and flags the landing page borrowed.
Read that page the week you apply. Whether you can start online, must visit a field office, or may mail a packet is SSA’s call. The lane depends on citizenship or immigration status, age, and whether you want a first card, a replacement, or a change to the record. Those rules move. This article will not freeze them.

Form SS-5 is the application
Form SS-5 is Application for a Social Security Card. One form covers three jobs: a first card for someone who has never been assigned a number, a replacement card for a number already on file, and a correction when the name or other data on the record is wrong.
The form itself is short. The work is the evidence. The same PDF can be a first-number request for an adult who never received a card, or a name-change request after a court order. What you bring or mail is not the same in those two cases, even though the form number is.
Get the current SS-5 from SSA, through the number-and-card pages or the form library SSA publishes. Blog copies drift. A 2019 PDF you printed from a random search result is a reliable way to have an office send you home. If a third-party site hosts “the official SS-5” next to a pay button, use SSA’s file instead.
- Start at SSAopen the number-and-card page the week you apply
- Use Form SS-5first card, replacement, or correction
- Bring evidenceage, identity, and citizenship or immigration status
- File with SSAfield office, mail, or online only if SSA says you may
Who files SS-5, and who already has a number
Adults who never received a number, many teenagers who left the hospital system without one, and people who need the record changed all use SS-5. Work-authorized noncitizens apply through SSA as well. Some people already in the United States can request a card on a USCIS form. Whether that request still mails a card without an SSA visit is SSA’s call that week. Some people who are not authorized to work can still be assigned a number for a narrow nonwork reason. Eligibility is SSA’s, based on the evidence and immigration rules in force that week, not on a flowchart in a blog.
Most U.S. newborns never see SS-5. A parent answers yes on the hospital birth-registration paperwork, and SSA mails a card. That program is Enumeration at Birth. The hospital form, the mailing address, and why area digits were never a sure birth state belong in Enumeration at Birth, not here.
If a child was not enumerated at the hospital, a parent or legal guardian still applies with SSA. A baby-registry site, a pediatric portal, or a “newborn SSN service” cannot assign the number. SSA’s current instructions say who must appear with the child and which adult can sign.
You should generally have one Social Security Number for life. A second card is almost always a replacement or a correction, not a second assignment. A different number is rare and only SSA decides. Do not invent a spare number with a format tool, and do not buy one from a site that claims it has unused blocks.
Proof of age, identity, and status
Plan on three kinds of proof: age, identity, and U.S. citizenship or current immigration status. A first card usually needs all three. A replacement sometimes needs less. A correction needs evidence of the identity SSA already has plus evidence of the legal change. SSA names the papers that count. We do not keep a packing list here, because packing lists rot.
Original documents, or copies certified by the issuing agency, are the usual standard. A phone photo, a color scan emailed to yourself, and a notary stamp on a photocopy are not the same thing as a certified birth certificate or an unexpired passport in your hand. If SSA’s current page says a document must be original, believe that page, not a comment about what “they accepted last time.”
Open SSA’s number-and-card page the week you apply and read the checklist there. Acceptable evidence changes. A passport that was enough last year can sit next to a new evidence code this year. Memorizing a 2022 blog post is how people take the wrong folder to the office. Use SSA’s list, dated by SSA, for the request you are actually making.
Field offices, mail, and original papers
Many first-time adult applications are completed in person at a field office, with the applicant and the original papers in the same room. Some replacement or correction requests can start online. Some packets can be mailed. SSA decides which lane you are in. A paid “concierge” does not.
Office hours, appointment rules, and which office serves your ZIP are published by SSA, and they vary. Check them the week you go. Do not trust a Facebook comment about walk-ins on Tuesday, and do not trust a third-party site that sells a reserved slot it does not control.
If SSA’s current instructions allow mail, follow those instructions for copies versus originals. Do not mail a passport because a forum said it is faster. If you must send original papers, use the packaging and tracking SSA describes that week, and keep your own record of what left the house.
Replacement cards and my Social Security
A lost, stolen, or damaged card is replaced by SSA. The number does not change. The card is the printout. You are asking for another copy of a number already assigned, not for a new identity.
Some people can request a replacement online through a my Social Security account when they meet SSA’s identity rules and their state participates. Everyone else uses SS-5 and the evidence path SSA lists for replacements. Online eligibility is not a vibe. It is a checklist on SSA’s site, and it is narrower than the ads imply.
SSA sets a yearly limit and a lifetime limit on replacement cards. Some legal name or status changes are handled outside those caps. The current limits and the exceptions live on SSA’s number-and-card pages. A viral thread that quotes last decade’s numbers is not a source.
A public “SSN generator,” a people-search dump, or this website cannot print a replacement. If a site offers to “reissue” a card after a credit-card charge, it is not SSA. If it asks you to upload a license so it can “notify Social Security,” close the tab.
Name changes and record corrections
Marriage, divorce, a court-ordered name change, and many other record corrections are filed on Form SS-5. You are not applying for a second Social Security Number. You are asking SSA to print the name or data the law now uses. Some status updates happen on a USCIS form instead. Follow the live SSA page for the request you are making.
You will need evidence of the identity SSA already has and evidence of the legal change. Which papers count is on SSA’s checklist the week you file, not on a wedding-vendor blog and not in a list we would have to rewrite every time SSA updates a document code.
A new card after a name change is still the same nine digits. Earnings that posted under the old name are a record question for SSA, often through my Social Security or an office visit. That is not a reason to invent a second number, and it is not a W-7.
Third-party funnels, fees, and look-alike domains
Search ads and copycat landing pages sell “priority Social Security applications.” They collect a fee, ask you to upload a license and a utility bill, and then tell you to visit SSA anyway. Some disappear after the charge. None of them become the Social Security Administration because they used a navy header and an eagle.
SSA states that it does not charge for a Social Security card. We are not going to quote a third-party price, because those prices are the scam, not a government fee schedule. A shopping cart on a look-alike domain is not a sign of a premium service. It is a sign you left the official SSA hostname.
Parents, guardians, and certain legal representatives can apply for someone else when SSA’s rules say they may. A stranger with a Gmail address and a “we file SS-5 for you” landing page is not that representative. If someone offers to keep your passport overnight so they can apply, that is not a shortcut. It is a way to lose a passport.
Third-party sites can explain the steps. This one does. They cannot accept a real SS-5, a replacement-card request, or a W-7. We do not take uploads. We do not take fees. We do not take Form SS-5. If you reached a checkout page from a link that mentioned this site, you are no longer on this site.
When the IRS form is W-7, not SS-5
An SSN is issued by SSA for earnings and benefits when you are eligible for one. An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is issued by the IRS when someone needs a U.S. taxpayer ID for a federal tax purpose and is not eligible for an SSN. That is not only “must file a return.” Those are different numbers with different jobs. An ITIN does not authorize work and does not pay Social Security benefits.
The IRS application is Form W-7, not SS-5. Do not mail a W-7 to a Social Security field office. Do not mail an SS-5 to the IRS ITIN operation. A paid site that “handles both” is still not SSA and still not the IRS.
Format, who issues which number, and why a 9xx string is never an SSN are on SSN vs ITIN vs EIN. If you already have an ITIN and later receive an SSN, stop using the ITIN and ask the IRS to combine the tax records. This site files neither form.
After you apply, and what this site still is
After SSA accepts the application, the card is mailed. Published processing times move with backlogs and with whether the request was in person, online, or by mail. Read the current estimate on SSA’s number-and-card pages. Do not pay a site that promises a faster government printer.
Guard the number. A card in the mail is not a reason to type the nine digits into a public checker, a job-scam form, or a housing listing. The plastic is convenient. The digits are the key.
What we will do is classify format in your browser against published reservation rules. What we will not do is accept an application, sell an unused number, or tell an employer that a name and number match. For that last job, see SSN validation is not verification. For the hospital path most U.S. newborns already used, see the Enumeration at Birth guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I apply for a Social Security Number?
On SSA’s number-and-card pages, or at an SSA office with Form SS-5 and original documents. This site does not take the application.
Can a third-party website file my SS-5?
No. SSA takes the application. Third-party funnels that ask for fees or uploads are not the official path, even if they rank in ads.
What documents do I need?
Expect proof of age, identity, and citizenship or immigration status. The acceptable papers change. Read SSA’s checklist on the number-and-card pages the week you apply. Do not use this article as a packing list.
How do I replace a lost Social Security card?
Through SSA. Some people can request a replacement online with a my Social Security account if their state participates. Yearly and lifetime limits apply. A generator or this site cannot issue a card.
Does SSA charge for a Social Security card?
SSA states that it does not charge for a Social Security card. A checkout page on a look-alike domain is not an official fee.
My baby was born in a U.S. hospital. Do I file SS-5?
Usually no. Most U.S. newborns are enumerated at the hospital. That path is explained in the Enumeration at Birth guide. If the hospital did not enumerate the child, a parent or guardian applies with SSA, not with a registry site.
I cannot get an SSN. Is that an ITIN?
Maybe. The IRS issues an ITIN on Form W-7 for a federal tax purpose when the person is not eligible for an SSN. Compare SSN, ITIN, and EIN on the classifier page. This site files neither SS-5 nor W-7.
Does this site issue Social Security Numbers?
No. We do not mint unused numbers and we do not accept applications. We only explain published rules and run a format check in your browser.
