What is an SSN validator?
We check whether nine digits match published format and reservation rules in your browser. You may see impossible, ITIN/ATIN, sample, or possible. We cannot confirm SSA assigned the number to anyone.
Answers about the format checker, every tool on this site, the guides, privacy, and when to use official SSA channels.
We check whether nine digits match published format and reservation rules in your browser. You may see impossible, ITIN/ATIN, sample, or possible. We cannot confirm SSA assigned the number to anyone.
The digits match published format and reservation rules. SSA assignment, an existing card, and a pass at SSNVS are separate questions.
The single-number field keeps only digits. Hyphens, spaces, and letters are stripped as you type. You need exactly nine digits. A partial number is not scored as possible or impossible until all nine are present. If you pasted from a PDF, check that nine digits remain after the field formats them.
Yes. No account and no fee. Type nine digits and see a result in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
Not here. A name-and-SSN match is SSA’s SSNVS for registered employers (Form W-2), or CBSV or eCBSV with consent. We do not offer people search or reverse lookup by name.
No. We only apply published format and reservation rules. Only the Social Security Administration can confirm that a number was assigned to a particular person.
No. SSN Validator is an independent format checker. Employers who need a name-and-number match use SSA’s SSNVS. Work authorization is E-Verify. Consent-based matches for enrolled companies are CBSV or eCBSV.
The checker runs in your browser and does not send the digits to our servers or put them in the URL. Use a device you trust.
No. We do not mint unused or valid-looking numbers. The tools only apply published reservation rules to digits you type.
Because we cannot match a person. A name-and-SSN check for wages is SSA’s SSNVS. Name, SSN, and date of birth with consent is CBSV or eCBSV. Work authorization is E-Verify.
No. Cardholders use my Social Security on ssa.gov. Employers use SSNVS. A “possible” format result says nothing about cards, death records, or benefits.
No. Steve Morse decodes historic area and group for numbers issued before 25 June 2011. Use SSN Structure and SSN Area Numbers for that historic chart. Neither tool can say a modern number was issued.
Nine digits, usually written AAA-GG-SSSS. SSN Structure splits those blocks. Hyphens are optional and do not change the digits.
On 25 June 2011 SSA began assigning numbers randomly. SSN Area Numbers lists the older public allocation chart only.
It is structurally possible and we still flag it as a common sample. The famous sample numbers guide explains 078-05-1120, 219-09-9999, and other placeholders.
Yes. Use SSN vs ITIN vs EIN. That tool still does not confirm that a number was issued to a person or a business.
Yes. The Bulk SSN Validator classifies up to 200 unique values in this browser. It is not SSA’s SSNVS file upload.
SSN Validator checks one number. Bulk SSN Validator handles up to 200. SSN Structure splits AAA-GG-SSSS. SSN Area Numbers is the pre-2011 allocation chart. SSN vs ITIN vs EIN classifies identifier types. The FICA Tax Calculator estimates 2026 Social Security and Medicare tax. None of them query SSA.
SSN Structure splits nine digits into area, group, and serial and notes published reservation rules on those blocks. After 25 June 2011 those labels do not mean a birth state. It is not a people-search or issuance lookup.
Use SSN Area Numbers. Read the first three digits and match them to the public chart. That chart applies only to numbers assigned before 25 June 2011. It is not a birth-state stamp and not a live assignment map.
Yes. The FICA Tax Calculator uses the 2026 Social Security wage base of $184,500, the 6.2% and 1.45% rates, and Additional Medicare Tax. It is an educational worksheet, not a filing tool.
The Guides index lists articles on AAA-GG-SSSS, 2011 randomization, impossible patterns, validation versus verification, protecting a number, how to apply, Enumeration at Birth, and famous sample numbers.
Through SSA, not this site. Start at ssa.gov/number-card. Form SS-5 and original documents go to SSA. We do not take applications. SSA states that it does not charge for a Social Security card. The how to apply guide explains the official path only.
Most U.S. newborns are enumerated at the hospital. The application address is a mailing ZIP on the birth-registration record, which is one reason a state guess from the first three digits fails. Details are in the Enumeration at Birth guide.
Do not type someone else’s number into a public site, including this one. Limit who sees all nine digits or the last four. If the number is misused, use IdentityTheft.gov and SSA’s own channels. The protect-your-number guide walks through those steps. We cannot file a freeze or an FTC report.
Validation here is a local format and reservation check. Verification is a name-and-number match at SSA (SSNVS, CBSV, or eCBSV) or work authorization at E-Verify. A “possible” result is not verification. The validation versus verification guide spells out each channel.
SSA does not assign area 000, area 666, areas 900–999, group 00, or serial 0000. Folklore lists such as leftover area 333 or “773 and above” are not current reservation rules. The impossible-patterns guide lists only published reservations.
No. Format tools run in your browser. We do not collect, store, or put the digits in a URL. Host logs may show an IP and the page path, not the number. Read the privacy policy.
Use the form on Contact Us. It asks for a name, an email, a topic, and a message about this website. Do not include a Social Security Number, an ITIN, an EIN, or anyone else’s identifier. The form rejects a number in that shape. Lost cards and identity cases belong at ssa.gov and IdentityTheft.gov.
No. SSN Validator is an independent educational site. The navy colors are for contrast, not SSA branding. Legal limits are on the disclaimer.
